Printmaking “especially the monotype print” is a medium that has allowed me to integrate process and content, and to create an artistic style in which the two are continually interdependent.
My current body of work is a series of abstract monotype prints — a painterly form of printmaking in which no two images are alike. This series is about motion, and the monotype, in particular, lends itself to spontaneity. The inks can be manipulated at a very swift pace, allowing me to capture impressions of fleeting moments.
The method I use is subtractive or dark-field. I ink a Plexiglas plate entirely with water-based ink and then work out the image by using different types of textures and pallet knives until I reach the desired effect.
My prints have been inspired by the transient movements of turbulent weather, shooting stars, and even the bounce of a grasshopper. All other pieces in this series evoke a sense of movement, whether created by energy or emotion.
